We certainly do! We have been training local government staff and councillors for more than 30 years and because we are a council-run organisation you can be sure that all our training is tailored to the sector.

Councils are tackling many of the same challenges – it makes sense to share experience and learning and support each other.

There are several ways you can do this.

For a start LGIU is owned and run by our members – so make sure you have an active Member Rep, who attends the Members’ Assembly AGM. The Members’ Assembly chooses the Executive Board and directs the work of the organisation through the Board. The LGIU’s research team carries out sector-leading research, which gathers evidence and develops solutions to some of the key challenges facing local government and local democracy around the world. Our programme is driven by our members’ priorities and there are frequent opportunities to be involved in this work.

Use your membership to share your best practice and achievements with our local government community. This could be through a case study highlighting a specific project or we can record an interview with a key member of your team. We can host someone from your council as a speaker on one of our panel events, or build an event around one of the council’s most significant achievements, where shared learning would be valuable to other members.

Look out for our advisory boards. Effectively these are steering groups where our members can play a part in deciding LGIU outputs for key topics. As these are established there will be opportunities for your council to join or contribute in other ways.

For some councils we are able to provide a more tailored service via our membership team or senior leadership team. Examples of this include:

• Facilitation and advice services for specific work/projects, eg LGR planning or internal negotiations.
• Horizon scanning sessions for the council, looking at emerging trends and key challenges to enable future planning.
• Small-scale learning exchanges, where an invited group senior council leaders will be hosted at a member council for a two-day learning programme built around a key subject, eg local economic growth.
