Management Fundamentals: developing as a manager or team leader

Overview

This programme is an innovative way to equip your cohort of managers with the knowledge and skills needed for their role. It concentrates on six fundamental principles for good management practice in local government. The programme incorporates the challenges organisations have faced due to the pandemic and how this new context for managing affects managers, in particular.

The programme consists of three day-long sessions, spread over a month. Each module provides input on the key principles and useful models and principles as well as opportunities to reflect, self-assess and work together.

Key outcomes:

  • Understand your preferences and management drivers
  • Learn what really motivates and how to create those conditions
  • Be more knowledgeable about well-being and resilience in the workplace.

Who should attend

These workshops are for managers (team leaders to service managers) who want to develop and improve their management skills.

 

Coursework

Some minimal pre-course work and homework are required, about two hours in total. As a part of this programme, we expect participants’ line managers to provide feedback and support. In addition, participants will be asked to complete a short assignment at the end of the sessions which pulls together the learning.

Certification

Successful completion of all aspects of the programme will be certificated and is CPD accredited.

Length: 3-days

Programme

DAY 1: Understanding the role & ability to choose style and approach

10:00-16:00 (1-hour lunch break included)

This session focuses on clarifying a manager’s role and responsibilities as well as the implications of COVID-19 on style and approach to work — particularly in relation to home and agile working. Topics include:

  • Balancing the requirements of being a manager and other demands
  • Considering task, team and individual requirements
  • Using the Situational Leadership model.

DAY 2: Motivate through your behaviour & organise yourself and your team

10:00-16:00 (1-hour lunch break included)

Understand how your behavioural choices can maximise your personal impact as well as how to prioritise and balance your time — especially managing your online availability for the team. Topics include:

  • Developing emotional intelligence as a manager to recognise stress and anxiety
  • Ensuring clear direction and maintaining a sense of team when working remotely
  • Delegating effectively and developing peoples’ capability through coaching and mentoring.

DAY 3: Managing performance & maintaining well-being and building resilience

10:00-16:00 (1-hour lunch break included)

Learn how to address issues as they arise and how to have difficult conversations to truly build supportive relationships throughout your team. Topics include:

  • Establishing expectations and focusing on outcomes
  • The links with the Council’s formal processes
  • Noticing behaviour changes and supporting people who may be struggling.

 

This course can also be tailored depending on the needs of individuals and the organisation.
